The Whales Grew Feet

I feel like a bystander
In the universe
Watching the events
Of my life
Fall into place.
If you pull the rug out from under me
I’ll get back up.
I’ll persevere.
Either way, I won’t worry
I know that never helps.
I’ll just realize
That I am a part of it all
Wordless fragments rise
From some ancient place
Their undulating shapes
Pass through me
And continue their ascent
Without labels
Without definitions
I’ll catch up with them.
Certain whales grew tired
Preferring a connection to the ground
They hover so close to the soil
That their flippers touch down
Leaving grooves in the dirt
They fight the tendency
To float any higher.
Eventually,
Over generations
Their limbs will transform into feet.
These few whales are content
Touching the ground.
Deep inside, they remember
That they once flew.
If you pull the rug out from under me
I’ll get back up.
